| | NEWS & NOTES | | Op-Ed: Hospital Infection Control Cuts Costs, Saves Lives | RFF Senior Fellow Ramanan Laxminarayan and co-author Ed Septimus of HCA Healthcare System explain that controlling hospital-acquired infections should be part of any health reform proposal that aims to reduce costs without sacrificing quality. Their analysis was published in the June 30 edition of Roll Call. The op-ed is available at ExtendingtheCure.org. | | Adaptation Atlas Update Debuts | | The first issue of the Atlas Report, a periodic newsletter from RFF’s Global Adaptation Atlas project, provides an overview and progress update on the initiative, plus background on the project’s advisory board and data and technology partners. The Adaptation Atlas is designed to help diverse audiences both visualize and download spatial data on projected impacts of climate change, as well as adaptation activities in their regions and around the world. RFF Fellow Shalini Vajjhala, who directs the Atlas project, described the work in a presentation at United Nations-sponsored climate discussions in Bonn. | | Regulating Technology Advances | RFF Senior Fellow Terry Davies suggests creation of a federal Department of Environmental and Consumer Protection in “Oversight of Next Generation Nanotechnology,” an April 2009 report published by the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. Davies notes that existing oversight and regulatory practices are ill-equipped to deal with 21st century advances such as nanotechnology and synthetic biology. A new agency would incorporate oversight, research and assessment, and monitoring functions – with a stronger reliance on scientific information to deal with product regulation and future health and environmental problems.

| FEATURES | | Threats to Health from Climate Change? | | A warming world could trigger new perils to public health, but an RFF study finds that adaptation policies could mitigate many of the potential consequences – including risks of illness from heat waves, allergic and infectious disease, and rising air pollution. | | Fighting TB with Interventions that Work | | A paper in Health Affairs by Ramanan Laxminarayan and colleagues finds that using proven treatment methods against tuberculosis not only works – but the economic benefits also outweigh the costs of implementation. | | New Ways to Connect with RFF | | Electronic publications, podcasts, and virtual presentations are some of the new tools we’ve added to improve your web experience. | | Achieving Efficient Coordination and Acceptance in Fishery Reform | | In a June 29 commentary, Robert Deacon discusses how a policy of assigning fishery harvest rights to groups rather than individuals can achieve gains from coordination that other rights-based management regimes fail to capture. | | Overseeing International Forest Conservation Programs | | With Congress designing plans to manage international forest conservation, a key question arises—who should be in charge? In a new issue brief, RFF’s Nigel Purvis, Ray Kopp, and Andrew Stevenson offer their suggestion. |
