A Low Carbon Electricity System in Europe by 2050
Event Details

Stephan Nagl, Institute of Energy Economics at the University of Cologne
Abstract
As an attempt to fight global warming, the EU Member States try to reduce CO2 emissions from electricity generation by significantly increasing the proportion of renewables. However, a recent scenario simulation of the Institute of Energy Economics shows that the technology-specific 2020 targets of the National Renewable Energy Action Plans differ significantly from the cost-efficient deployment throughout Europe. Additionally, the achievement of short-term CO2 emission reduction targets requires strong CO2 price signals of more than 55 €/t CO2. In the long term large interconnector capacities enable the cost-efficient deployment and integration of renewable energies.
