Using property value data from New York and Pennsylvania to look at the impacts of proximity to a shale gas well on home values, experts find that the effects differ depending on whether homes have access to piped water versus well groundwater. (Published in the American Economic Review)

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper deserves some credit for creating the state’s Oil and Gas Task Force as a means of reducing the heat around the November ballot. In an effort to cool tensions among Colorado’s oil and gas industry, some local governments, and citizen groups, and as part of a deal to create the task force, a handful of controversial initiatives were withdrawn.

At this RFF seminar, Jason Furman, chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers (CEA), unveiled a new CEA report that examines the economic principles underlying the program, discusses the case for reform, and provides quantitative estimates of the effects of such changes. Furman's remarks were followed by an expert panel discussion on reforming the federal coal leasing program.
