Vice President for Research
Resources for the Future (RFF), a leading non-partisan research institution devoted to improving environmental and natural resource policymaking, seeks a Vice President for Research (VPR). This is a new position that was created as a result of a comprehensive strategic review and is designed to drive the research agenda toward sharper institutional focus and increased policy impact.
RFF is widely regarded as an unrivaled source of non-partisan, credible and objective analysis regarding complex environmental issues. It has a history of ground-breaking research that has
led the field in critical analysis. Under its new strategic plan, RFF plans to enhance its reputation for cutting edge research; expand its intellectual reach through innovative partnerships and leverage its knowledge base for greater policy impact.
The Board created the Vice President for Research position to lead this process. S/he will oversee all RFF research and will be charged with strengthening the organization by working
with President Sharp and senior management to identify new ideas and opportunities to expand research initiatives to increase the impact both of the institution and individual researchers, and integrate research, communications, fundraising, and other functions. In particular the VPR, with the President and other officers, will lead RFF to:
- increase its capacity (financial, managerial, and intellectual) to act in a strategic, coordinated, and focused fashion, by developing a new commitment to priority setting, emphasizing programs, identifying core research areas;
- retain and reinforce its critical mass and identity in economics and other quantitative social sciences, including risk analysis, while embracing other disciplines and integrating them into the institution;
- make a substantial commitment to make better strategic use of its convener role and pursue partnerships at the project level with counterpart institutions.
This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and accomplished individual to help lead a highly respected research organization with a rich history and record of accomplishments to the next level of the national and global policy discourse and impact. The ideal candidate will possess a
strong record of academic research and institutional leadership. S/he will be collaborative, collegial and committed to the highest standards of scholarship.
