RFF's Future of Power Initiative

RFF experts are analyzing how policies and institutions can and should evolve to guide the electricity sector through an efficient and effective transformation toward a low-carbon future.

RFF has been conducting research on the US power sector for decades, bringing economic insights to bear on the design, functioning, and improvement of electricity markets and a broad sweep of related government policies. Now, RFF has launched a new round of electricity-focused work through its Future of Power Initiative, which focuses on conducting research and engaging with decisionmakers to inform the ongoing transformation and decarbonization of the sector.

The initiative encompasses four tracks:

  • Reform of wholesale competitive markets and investment planning in regulated markets;
  • Accelerated integration of renewables and storage;
  • System integration of distributed energy and demand side services; and
  • Economy-wide electrification and decarbonization.
