With the 30th UN Conference of the Parties (COP) in the rear-view mirror, this confidential, Chatham House Rule dialogue will take stock of what happened. Hosted in Brazil and taking place 10 years after the landmark Paris Climate Agreement, there was a busy agenda for this year’s COP, though expectations were constrained. While the Trump Administration did not send a delegation, and not one US TV News network sent cameras or reporters, the US was represented by state and local officials, as well as by civil society organizations. Carbon pricing was very much a point of discussion, with Brazil introducing a declaration on an “Open Coalition for Compliance Carbon Markets” in the pre-COP Leader’s Summit, the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) set to enter its definitive regime on Jan 1, and Brazil also proposing a voluntary coalition of countries for integrating carbon market initiatives.

In this dialogue, we’ll get an overview of what happened, and cover each of these topics: what the EU CBAM’s definitive regime will look like, considerations for building a climate coalition around carbon pricing, trade and development, and the growing interest in carbon credit markets. We hope you’ll be able to join us!
