Powering Real-World Outcomes

Providing the Tools Needed to Meet Tomorrow's Energy Demands

At Resources for the Future, I study the intricacies of electricity markets that most people never think about—but that quietly determine how the lights stay on, what we pay for power, and whether our grid can handle tomorrow’s demands.

Today, the electricity grid is under enormous strain. New demand from AI data centers, electric vehicles, and industrial electrification is straining the grid more than ever before. My colleagues and I work to understand the trade-offs these pressures create.

“Do market rules reward flexibility and reliability?” “Are costs fairly shared?” “How do we bring new technologies online without disrupting the system that’s currently working?” These aren’t easy questions but answering them is essential if we want a power system that is reliable, affordable, and sustainable.

Our research doesn’t always make the news, but we know it helps shape real-world outcomes. By analyzing and clarifying complex trade-offs, we help policymakers, regulators, and industry leaders guide investments and develop policies to build the infrastructure required for tomorrow’s energy demands.

I believe deeply in the importance of our work, and I’m grateful to know that many of our supporters do too. As RFF’s Founders’ Day approaches, I hope you’ll consider making a gift that sustains work like mine. Your support ensures that my colleagues and I can continue examining the toughest questions, evaluating costs and benefits, and delivering insights that help shape smarter policies.
