"Under this plan, the coal industry might have cleaned up by selling more of its dirty fuel, but consumers would have paid a collective fortune. A study conducted by Resources for the Future estimated the total subsidy necessary to guarantee profits for coal and nuclear generators in 2025 would have amounted to $7.6 billion. Between 2020 and 2045, the subsidies would have cost consumers an estimated $72 billion."
