According to an estimate by leading commodity economics think-tank Resources for the Future, lower energy costs should put an extra $350 billion (£228 billion) in the pockets of US consumers this year, the equivalent of $2,790 per household, or 2% of total annual GDP. Globally, further gains should be realised by a parallel drop in gas prices, particularly within Europe.
