Event Details

Resources for the Future (RFF)’s Solar Geoengineering Research Project and the Harvard Solar Geoengineering Research Program seek to improve understanding of the risks, potential benefits, and other uncertain implications of solar radiation modification (SRM) as one approach among others to help address climate change risk.

As part of these efforts, the cohosts invite submissions for individuals to present new, recent, or ongoing social and economic science research on SRM at the 4th annual RFF and Harvard Social Science Research Workshop on Solar Radiation Modification, to be held September 10-11, 2026, at Resources for the Future in Washington, DC.

Submit a Presentation Proposal

We encourage presentation proposals from a wide range of scholars, drawing from a variety of social science disciplines defined broadly (including political science, economics, public policy, international affairs, law, sociology, psychology and behavioral science, history, geography, science & technology studies, and anthropology, as well as the humanities, including philosophy and ethics, among other fields). Interdisciplinary research integrating social and physical aspects of SRM is welcome. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from researchers or research teams from less developed countries of the Global South.

We invite proposals on these research topics: the role of SRM in a broad climate policy portfolio; the political economy of SRM; governance and institutional design; the geopolitics and international relations of SRM; domestic politics of SRM; public perception and risk communication; and ethics and justice. In addition, we will consider social science research applied to other SRM questions.

Some travel support is available for accepted presenters who may require it. If this applies, please indicate so in your application. Registration information to attend the meeting online for non-presenting attendees will be made available prior to the workshop.
