"But energy analysts quickly tempered his concern, noting that even though renewable energy sources stayed level, their capacity increased by 180 gigawatts. Second, renewable growth outpaced non-renewable growth last year as it did for six out of the past seven years, according to Resources for the Future. And third, non-renewable growth stayed flat, too.

"'This could just reflect a moderation in overall power-sector growth rather than something specific to renewables,' said Richard Newell, president of RFF."
