E&E News: “AI Could Strengthen the Credibility of Carbon Markets, Report Says”
RFF Fellow Milan Elkerbout is quoted in an article about the relationship between artificial intelligence and carbon markets.
“One carbon market expert said AI might help, but it won’t fix everything wrong with the voluntary carbon market.
‘All of the issues with carbon markets today are much more political, and AI cannot address those,’ said Milan Elkerbout, director of the International Climate Policy Initiative at Resources for the Future, a nonprofit think tank.
Corporations investing in climate projects might not value credibility as much as they want to minimize the costs of their investments and appear to be offsetting emissions, Elkerbout said.
‘That is a more fundamental issue with carbon markets that AI can't really help with,’ Elkerbout added.”
