E&E News: “Researchers Cite Billions in Climate-Related Losses for Forest Owners”
This story shares the key findings of new RFF research.
“Wildfires, hurricanes, and other impacts of the changing climate are costing forest owners in the eastern United States tens of billions of dollars annually, an environment and energy research group said. The working paper from Resources for the Future spotlights the economic hit climate change is taking in a part of the country that’s a key source of lumber and pulp — and an important region for the Trump administration’s goal to curb U.S. reliance on wood imports.
... The paper also highlights the effects of forest disturbances that are unexpected — such as a weather disaster — compared to changes that forest owners can plan for through management practices. As much as 40 percent of the losses forest owners saw in the latter period couldn’t be predicted by what they experienced in the earlier period, according to the paper.”
