James Boyd Appointed to RFF Thomas Klutznick Chair
WASHINGTON, DC—Resources for the Future (RFF) is announcing the recent appointment of Senior Fellow James W. Boyd to the Thomas Klutznick Chair in Environmental Policy. The Chair supports research related to urban development, land-use planning, and transportation issues.
Boyd’s research emphasizes collaboration between economists and ecologists to improve environmental policies and natural resource management.
As the Klutznick Chair, Boyd will explore ways federal restoration and environmental improvement funding can be directed to urban areas and “natural and nature-based” alternatives to “gray” storm protection and other water investments.
“This appointment recognizes Jim’s leadership in greening economic growth,” said RFF President Richard Newell. “His work reflects the spirit of the Klutznick chair in envisioning solutions to major policy challenges.”
Boyd has served on National Academy of Science and other advisory panels, including the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Committee on Valuing Ecological Systems and Services. He has been a visiting professor at Stanford University (2007–2008) and Washington University in St. Louis (1996) and was director of the Energy and Natural Resources Division at Resources for the Future (2002–2007).
Boyd currently serves in RFF’s Land, Water, and Nature Program, which delivers research and solutions for cost-effectively managing key land, water, and marine resources that support a thriving economy, while ensuring healthy and productive natural systems and building resilience in a changing climate.
Previous Klutznick chairs include Margaret Walls, Allen Blackman, and Juha Siikamaki.
The Chair was established in 2011 through the support of Thomas Klutznick, a long-time supporter of RFF research. Founder of the Klutznick Company, a privately held real estate investment, development, and consulting firm headquartered in Chicago, Klutznick has been a strong advocate of balancing effective urban renewal and community development policies with environmental protection. Klutznick served on the RFF Board of Directors from 1985 to 1994, and was instrumental in establishing RFF’s own real estate portfolio.
